System prompt

A system prompt is the standing set of instructions that defines how an AI assistant behaves in an application.

It sets role, tone, rules and boundaries, separate from the user message. Good system prompts are specific, tested with evaluations and versioned like code.

They are not a security boundary on their own: back them with permissions and guardrails.
