platform / explore

Answers for everyone, without waiting on SQL.

Explore is the analysis area for the tables your team has modelled. Pick a table, choose dimensions and metrics, and get a chart, or write SQL when you want to. Everything uses your governed definitions.

Dimensions and metrics come from your dbt code, so every chart uses the same definitions. The query size is shown before you run.

faq

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to write SQL?

No. You can pick a table, dimensions and metrics and filter, then run. If you prefer SQL, the SQL runner lets you write it and chart the result.

Where do the metrics and dimensions come from?

From your dbt YAML in Build, the semantic layer. That is why they mean the same thing for everyone, and why the AI agent gives the same answers.

What is a virtual view?

A saved SQL query that appears in Explore as a table. It exists only inside Explore and stores the query, not the data. For anything your team depends on, create a dbt model instead.

Can I control query cost?

Yes. Explore shows the data a query will process before you run it. Each project has a largest-query limit, 10 GB by default, and oversized queries are blocked.

Can I create my own metrics?

Yes, for your own exploration. To make one permanent and shared, add it to the model in Build.

Does it work with other BI tools?

Yes. The same tables work with any BI tool. Explore is built to make the most of your semantic layer.
