Cross-domain tracking lets analytics treat a visit that spans several domains as one session.

Without it, a visitor who moves from your marketing site to a checkout on another domain appears as a new user, and the original source is lost. Linking the domains passes the client identifier along in the URL.
It is a common cause of inflated self-referrals and broken attribution after checkout.
